For the downriggers we have been fishing in 130ft to 140ft of water with 140ft of cable down. The most consistant lure has been the Baby Brown king cobra. The catch rates have been consistantly good where ever you go but, with the approach of winter and the cooler weather, the thermocline will be breaking up any time now and the fishing will become a little more challenging. The trout are generally in the 2.5lb to 3.5lb range but 5lb to 7lb fish are not uncommon and the condition of the trout is superb. There will be some very good fishing in the rivers this spawning season if what we are catching in the lake is any indication.
For those who are prepared to get out early in the morning the harling is still an option with all the old faithfuls - Parsons Glory, Ginger Mick and Taupo Tiger. With settled weather jigging at 100 to 150 feet using small smelt flies is still an option if you manage to be in the right place at the right time but this will become less productive as the thermocline breaks up.
